A well-planned BQ adds value. A badly planned one wastes space. Here is how to decide.
A boys’ quarters, or BQ, is a separate living unit in the compound, commonly used for domestic staff, guests or extra family. It is a distinctly Nigerian feature.
Do you need one?
Consider whether you need accommodation for staff, a guest or relative, or a space that could be used independently. If not, the space and money may serve you better elsewhere.
Typical BQ layouts
- Single room with toilet and bath: the simplest option
- Room with kitchenette: more independent living
- Two-room unit: for larger households or extra flexibility
Planning tips
- Place it at the rear or side, with separate access where possible
- Keep it clear of the main house’s setbacks and drainage paths
- Plan plumbing and electrical connections early to keep costs down
- Make sure it fits your plot, since extra buildings use space
Check plot size and approvals first
A BQ affects how much of your plot is covered. Read how to choose the right house plan for your land and our guide on 50 by 100 or 60 by 100 plots.
