Block size and quality affect strength, cost and comfort. Here is how to choose and what to check.
Blocks make up most of your walls, so the choice matters. In Nigeria, the two sizes you will hear about most are 6-inch and 9-inch sandcrete blocks.
6-inch blocks
These are thinner and lighter. They are commonly used for internal partition walls, where less load is carried.
9-inch blocks
These are thicker and stronger. They are commonly used for external and load-bearing walls, and often for storey buildings such as duplexes.
Your engineer’s drawings make the final decision. Our architectural vs structural drawings guide explains why the structural design must guide these choices.
Why quality matters as much as size
Even the right size fails if the blocks are poorly made. Look out for:
- Poor mix: too little cement makes weak blocks
- Poor curing: blocks must be cured properly, not rushed to site
- Crumbling edges: blocks that break easily when handled are a warning sign
- Inconsistent sizes: uneven blocks lead to uneven walls and extra plastering
Ask your engineer to specify the mix and inspect blocks before they go into the wall.
Block choice and your budget
Thicker blocks cost more, but cutting corners on external walls can cost far more later. Compare real figures in our cost guide for building a house in Nigeria.
Match your wall design to your plan
A duplex usually needs stronger walls than a single-storey bungalow. Our building construction services include supervision to make sure materials meet the specification. Contact us or chat on WhatsApp.
